Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of U.S. President Donald Trump, will visit Korea next week for a 2-night, 3-day schedule. This visit is made possible by the invitation of Chung Yong-jin, Chairman of Shinsegae Group, and is gaining attention as an unofficial communication channel between the Trump administration and the Korean business community amidst growing trade uncertainties.
The background of his visit includes the business community's concerns about trade uncertainties that are still visible, as the Trump administration recently postponed the announced 25% reciprocal tariff measures on Korean products for 90 days. Amidst these growing concerns, it is known that Chairman Chung Yong-jin, who has maintained a long exchange with Trump Jr., visited the U.S. in person to make this visit possible.
A Shinsegae Group official explained, "Chairman Chung played a role in establishing a civilian communication channel with the Trump administration at the request of the business community, and Trump Jr. responded to this."
Trump Jr.'s visit is the first official visit since President Trump's inauguration, drawing attention to whether it will open a clue for communication between Korean companies and the U.S. government at the level of civilian diplomacy. The industry is also focusing on the possibility that this visit will be used as an unofficial basis for future trade negotiations.
